The Work

Byron Katie’s “The Work” is a powerful tool for self-inquiry and personal transformation. It consists of four simple questions and a turnaround process that can help clients identify and question their limiting beliefs and gain new perspectives on their challenges. Here is a life coaching tool using “The Work”:

Step 1: Identify a stressful thought or belief Ask your client to identify a thought or belief that is causing them stress, anxiety, or limiting their potential. For example, “I’m not good enough to get that promotion” or “I’ll never find someone who loves me for who I am”.

Step 2: Ask the four questions Once your client has identified a stressful thought, guide them through the following four questions:

  1. Is it true?
  2. Can you absolutely know that it’s true?
  3. How do you react, what happens, when you believe that thought?
  4. Who would you be without the thought?

Encourage your client to be honest with themselves and answer each question as fully as possible. This process can help them identify any assumptions or biases they have and begin to challenge their limiting beliefs.

Step 3: Turn it around After answering the four questions, guide your client through the turnaround process. This involves taking the original statement and turning it around in three different ways:

  1. Turn it around to the opposite: “I’m good enough to get that promotion”
  2. Turn it around to the self: “I’m not good enough for myself to get that promotion”
  3. Turn it around to the other: “They’re not good enough to get that promotion”

By turning the thought or belief around, your client can gain new insights and perspectives on their situation, and begin to see that there are alternative ways of thinking and believing.

Step 4: Find evidence for the turnaround Finally, encourage your client to find evidence for each of the turnaround statements. This can help them see that there is truth and validity in each statement, and that their original thought or belief may not be as accurate or all-encompassing as they once believed.

By using “The Work” in this way, you can help your clients identify and challenge their limiting beliefs, gain new perspectives on their challenges, and begin to create positive and empowering change in their lives.
